Unofficial First Project

A developmental reading of How We Fall (by Jac, directed by Glenn) at The Tank in 2019 would be the unofficial first project of Kervigo. It solidified the values and practices that would then form Kervigo months later.

Core Values

  • Collaboration and Equality: The idea doesn't stop with one person, and we work to make all voices heard and represented.

  • Transparency: The courage to share your opinions and ideas, is not only welcome at all times but necessary. As a company, Kervigo will be transparent in their administrative work and practices.

  • Sustainability: Creation doesn't warrant destroying the planet.

  • Innovation: New models of practice are always on the horizon.

  • Accessibility and Equity: Everyone has the right to experience and create theater regardless of gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic background, color, place of birth, citizenship, ancestry, age, religion, ability, socioeconomic background or status, or marital or parental status.

  • Respect: Your truth does not negate someone else's; treat others the way they want to be treated.

  • Quality: Whatever we do, we do passionately and well, or we don't do it at all.

Anti-Racist Theater

Kervigo Ensemble Theater acknowledges the theatre industrial complex has been built on, continues to perpetuate, and relies on white supremacy. Kervigo recognizes the harm this structure has done to the global majority and the industry as a whole. Therefore we are committed to creating and maintaining policies and work that reject white supremacist practices and culture in any space where Kervigo is present. Anti-Racism work is a continuing process that requires constant evaluation, and Kervigo will routinely evaluate our practices and policies as well as constantly check in with our personal biases.

Vision

Theater is about human stories, and that can’t happen without a community of storytellers, which is why we strive to be a haven for artistic exploration and development through our Core Collaborators and Guest Artists, or “Ensemble.”  As we foster this community, we challenge how we create art so as to free our Artists from any physical or mental limitations that would otherwise keep them from their art.

But with the human need to tell stories is also the human need to experience stories. Just like we advocate for our Artists, we do so for our Audience as well by making theater accessible and available for all.

In creating theater for Audiences of today by the voices of today, we are passionate about prioritizing sustainable theater practices so as not to harm our planet.

“Kervigo?”

Started in December 2019 by Glenn Girón and Jac Ford, they named the company Kervigo, which is the hybrid of “kerno” (core) and “levigo” (rise). Both words come from Esperanto, which is the universal language created by L.L. Zamenhof in 1887 to foster international peace and understanding. It is our hope that through amplifying, or raising, the voices of today we can, like Zamenhof, promote more universal peace and understanding.
